STATEMENT FROM DURHAM COLLEGE STUDENTS INC. REGARDING ANTI-BLACK RACISM AND RECENT EVENTS

(OSHAWA, ONTARIO - JUNE 4, 2020) – Anti-Black racism is real. We hear the hurt coming from our community in light of the murders of more innocent people. Our Black student and staff communities are hurting and ask for us to listen, learn, and most importantly act.

Together we stand in solidarity with the Black community, from our students, faculty, staff, and community partners, against this hate. We are here to support our students through this time in any way we can and if you want to join the conversation, or need support, please reach out to us.

While we support all equity seeking groups and students, we want to do something, even though it is not enough, to start amplifying the Black voices in our community. The DCSI is committed to hosting events every month of the 2020-2021 academic year to educate on anti-Black racism and celebrate Black excellence. We will support and hire Black educators, storytellers, entrepreneurs, and entertainers to host these events.

We will also be working with the Durham College office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Transitions to create spaces for Black identified students and staff to talk, connect, and share about anti-Black racism.

Pangea 2020: Cancelled

We have had to make the difficult decision to cancel Pangea.

Amidst our disappointment for the event being cancelled, we are also extremely proud of everyone who worked to try make this event possible. This was by far our biggest year for student auditions and it means a lot to us that you wanted to bring your culture to the campus community. The OTSU and DCSI will continue to work with the administration to keep up to date of current information and make informed decisions accordingly.

This was not a decision we take lightly and we appreciate your understanding.

The status of future events will be updated over the next week as we get more information.
